Über das Album und die Band lesen wir: „Koro Almost Brass is an atypical group, especially in jazz, where saxophone quartets are more common. It’s somewhat comparable to the brass quintet in classical music, and the difference lies in the alto sax replacing the second trumpet. Bridging the gap between jazz, improvised music par excellence, and classical music, which is entirely written down, is one of Koro’s goals. Trumpeter Fulvio Sigurtà, alto saxophonist Cristiano Arcelli, who is also the arranger, and trombonist Massimo Morganti are jazz musicians that need no introduction as they are virtuosi on their instruments at an international level, while Glauco Benedetti is one of the few Italian tuba soloists. The French horn enriches the already widewide array of sounds by strengthening the bond between classical and African American music and is played by Giovanni Hoffer, an internationally renowned classical musician and the master of jazz horn in Europe.“

Wie gesagt, bei dem Arrangieren von Monk-Kompositionen würde man ein klassisches Klavier-Trio oder ein Saxofon-Quartett erwarten. Doch das ist hier bei dem Debüt des italienischen Koro Almost Brass-Ensembles nicht der Fall, sodass man als Hörer nicht stets verführt wird, das Original zum Vergleich heranzuziehen. Mit einem beinahe klassischen Brass-Setting verwandelt sich Monk in eine Mischung aus Swing, New Orleans Jazz, Lindy Hop, Marching Band-Musik und instrumentalen Broadway-Songs und Tanzmusik vergangener Zeiten, als Beatmusik und Rock keine Bedeutung hatten. Das lässt aufhorchen, zumal wenn man sich den Klangfärbungen von French Horn (Waldhorn) und Tuba hingibt. Beide übernehmen mehr oder minder die Funktion des klassischen Kontrabasses und sind dabei auf das Engste miteinander verbunden.

Arrangiert wurden alle bekannten Kompositionen so auch „Bemsha Swing“ von 1959, „Round Midnight“, erstmals 1944 veröffentlicht, „Epistrophy“, komponiert von Thelonious Monk und Kenny Clarke im Jahr 1941 oder „Rhythm–A–Ning“, zuerst aufgenommen 1957. Monk, einer der führenden Köpfe des Bebop erfährt allerdings auf diesem Album eine eigenständige Interpretation in Richtung auf die oben genannten Genres. Nur selten erleben wir genuinen Bop. Das tut dem Hörerlebnis jedoch keinen Abbruch. Im Gegenteil die „Brass-Formation“ eröffnet neue Zugänge zur Musik Monks.
