Mexican composer, saxophonist and writer Alain Derbez visits Belgium
Alain Derbez is coming to Europe to present more than a book. It’s a book with essays, interviews, approaches and various texts about blues and jazz which has been published this month by Turner. The title is “Pen in hand” (it’s about blues and jazz). He wanted to give it another title but the publisher (originally Spanish title: “Pluma en mano") thought of a title more direct to them, so he agreed. In his book there are, among other topics, collected conversations with creators such as Charlie Haden, Taj Mahal, Henry Threadgill, Big Joe Williams, Betsy Pecanins, etc ., free jazz essays about Miles Davis and about jazz in Mexico City ...
In addition to that he has two more books: his recent novel called “Antes muerto” (Before Dead), which is based on the life of libertarian and feminist fighter, Emma Goldman, and the other book also presents a documentary about the Spanish Exile in Mexico, the exile on foot, called “Life and not its laments (exile with two voices)”. The dates for Turner have not been well organized, but he knows that the presentations will be in Barcelona and Madrid in October. After Spain he visits Belgium from October 12th until 14th.
Belgium attracts him because the new novel he’s writing includes something about Adolph Sax, which is why he wants to visit Dinant.
